As a doctor involved in providing Cosmetic Medical services, I am often asked about skin care products and makeup. I recommend mineral makeup to my clients for both aesthetic and medical reasons. Mineral makeup is a natural, loose, light, powder foundation and gives the skin a youthful and glowing appearance. It can diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It is often available in multiple foundation colours, allowing you to select the colour which works best for their skin tone. It blends with your facial oil, creating your own unique colour. It is water resistant which makes it useful for use at the beach or pool. I am most excited by the medical benefits of mineral makeup. It does not clog pores and is therefore particularly useful for people with acne prone skin. It helps calm the skin and is hypoallergenic.It often provides SPF 15 protection to help reduce skin ageing and skin cancer. After cosmetic facial resurfacing procedures such as laser or chemical peels it is the makeup of choice. However, it is vital to ensure that the mineral makeup you use is natural and does not contain additives, chemicals or other artificial ingredients. Bismuth Oxychloride is an ingredient commonly used in mineral makeup to produce shine. It is considered to be a mineral, so many manufacturers try to pass off their makeup as being pure mineral, but it is not a natural one found in the earth. It can be a skin irritant and can cause rashes and itching.
